Always mid-high or high, never low
Shoes for motorsport are mid-high or high and must always protect the ankles. Low shoes are therefore never FIA approved.
High shoes generally provide a bit more support to the ankles compared to mid-high shoes, but offer somewhat less freedom of movement. In rally sports, a high shoe is often desirable since walking on unpaved surfaces is common, and good support is necessary. On the circuit, personal preference often determines the choice between high or mid-high.
The fit of racing shoes is often narrow to prevent hitting the wrong pedal with all the consequences that entail. The purpose of a racing shoe is to convey the feeling as well as possible. It is important that the shoe fits well around the foot and has a space of no more than 5 - 10 millimeters at the front in the driving position. The main difference between various shoes is often in the sole and the materials used.
The more expensive models are often equipped with a stiffer but very thin sole, sometimes reinforced with carbon fibers, which can optimally convey the pedal feel to the driver. Additionally, more expensive shoes often use materials such as kangaroo leather, which is very comfortable to wear.
Shoes must be equipped with the FIA Standard 8856-2000 or 8856-2018.
