Difference between an approved and an indoor overall
The basis of the kart outfit is the overall. In overalls, we distinguish between approved overalls and so-called indoor overalls.
An indoor overall is essentially nothing more than a single-layer mechanic's overall, which is often worn over regular clothing. An indoor overall offers minimal protection and comfort, for these reasons we also advise against its use. Approved overalls consist of 2 layers of abrasion-resistant material and therefore protect the driver much better. These overalls can be recognized by the CIK-FIA label in the collar and are called Level 2 overalls.
When you want to participate in races, an approved overall is required, with the exception of some club races. It is a misconception that kart overalls are flame retardant; unlike overalls for motorsport, this is not the case. A kart overall is designed to be abrasion-resistant, meaning that the materials used are much stronger than their equivalents used for overalls in motorsport. In terms of appearance, kart overalls vary greatly; there are overalls entirely in one color but also overalls in the most striking designs. So there is something for everyone.
Freedom of movement and comfort depending on used materials
Because you move much more in a kart than in a race car - where you are strapped in with a 6-point harness - the freedom of movement and comfort that a kart overall offers is an important factor. This is also one of the points where the distinction is made between a cheap and a more expensive overall; the better overalls have more stretch panels at important points that provide more flexibility. Another difference is made by the materials used. Where the cheaper overalls are made of stiff and less breathable materials, these materials in the better overalls are much more flexible - sometimes equipped with stretch - and often have special breathable parts in the fabric.
Brand-specific size charts
When purchasing a kart overall, it is very important to choose the right size. Since not everyone has the opportunity to come and try them on, we have added a brand-specific size chart to all the overalls we offer on our website. By measuring a number of points including height, weight, chest circumference, and waist, the size chart provides a size recommendation. Because not everyone has the same body shape, it may be that the measured points fall within different sizes in the size chart. As a result, a compromise may need to be found in certain cases, something we are happy to advise you on. So do not hesitate to contact us!
It is worth mentioning that each brand has its own sizing. For example, if you have tried on a Sparco overall in size 52, this does not mean that an Alpinestars overall in the same size will fit.
