Grip and Feel

Alpinestars glove stitched inside and outsideThe point where everything revolves around in racing gloves is grip. A racing glove is, just like racing shoes, made to convey as much feeling as possible. It is therefore important that a racing glove fits well around the hand and is not too large, see it as a second skin.

With racing gloves, there is often a choice between inside-stitched and outside-stitched seams. With inside-stitched gloves, as the name suggests, the stitches are on the inside. The disadvantage of this is that they are between the hand and the steering wheel and thus take away some feeling. With outside-stitched gloves, the seams are positioned in such a way that they are not between the hand and the steering wheel, thus providing a more direct feel.

As mentioned earlier, grip is a very important point, after all, you don't want the steering wheel to slip through your hand unintentionally. Manufacturers come up with all sorts of things to create as much grip as possible, from silicone paddings to suction cups. Often, the more expensive gloves are equipped with the most innovative solutions for as much grip as possible. Some gloves are equipped with an extra Velcro closure around the wrist, which ensures a better-fitting fit.

Gloves must comply with the FIA Standard 8856-2000 or 8856-2018.
