A neck protector, like a rib protector, can be considered an essential part of the protection for the kart driver. Wearing a rib protector significantly reduces the chance of whiplash or other neck injuries.
The neck protector ensures that the space around the neck is filled, thereby limiting the freedom of movement of the neck and consequently the head.
From foam collar to shock-absorbing neck protectors
Neck protectors for karting range from a simple foam collar to advanced systems with shock-absorbing properties. In competitions, a neck protector is mandatory for all drivers aged 15 and younger (KNAF regulations), which is logically explained by the fact that the neck of a young driver does not yet have the strength of an adult. Most neck protectors are available in a youth version and an adult version. A neck protector does not need to be homologated in karting.
