More comfortable, thinner, and better in fire retardancy
A set of underwear for motorsports consists of a long-sleeved turtleneck T-shirt, long underpants, socks, and a balaclava (helmet liner). Short-sleeved T-shirts or shorts are not allowed by the FIA.
Where the underwear used to be "yellow" in color and often chafed/itched, it is now mostly white or black and is very comfortable to wear. It is also much thinner now but still better fire retardant than before. The prices of the underwear vary considerably, which in most cases has to do with the choice of material. Generally, the more expensive underwear is thinner, better breathable, more nicely tailored, and better fire retardant compared to the more affordable underwear. The seams are also finished thinner to prevent irritation. Since the underwear is the first thing that comes into contact with the driver's body and thus plays an important role in dissipating heat and perspiration moisture, a good set of underwear is a wise investment. It is recommended to purchase an extra set to change during the day or race weekend, an easy way to start fresh again!
Just like with overalls, it is possible to apply advertisements on the underwear through printing.
All parts of the underwear set must be provided with the FIA Standard 8856-2000 or 8856-2018.
